SAWAKO NASU
Ken Nakahashi is pleased to present “Boogie Woogie for the Turned Away,” Sawako Nasu’s second solo exhibition at the gallery. Nasu pursues a mode of painting that resists fixation in a single form or place. Working with found canvases that bear the marks of time, she develops her compositions through repeated processes of layering and wiping away paint, allowing chance contours to emerge on the surface and deferring resolution. Continuing ideas she has explored previously, this exhibition will employ unconventional display methods, including the replacement of works during the exhibition period. The title alludes to Piet Mondrian’s final work Victory Boogie Woogie (1942–44)—the unfinished state of which is an inspiration to Nasu—while proposing “turning away” as an alternative to linear progress.
KEN NAKAHASHI
Ken Nakahashi was established in 2014 with a commitment to finding new ways of understanding the dynamics between art and humanity. The gallery shows artists who investigate various issues of global society against the backdrop of our ever-expanding collective history. Represented artists include Yuki Harada, Eiki Mori, Masaharu Sato, and Erik Swars, among others.
