JONATHAS DE ANDRADE: DIRECTED GAMES (SCREENING/PERFORMANCE)
In Jonathas de Andrade’s film Directed Games (2019), presented in “MOT’s 30th Anniversary Exhibition: Choreographies of the Everyday,” vocabulary from a uniquely developed sign language in the community of Várzea Queimada in Brazil appears on screen, with each word accompanied by the sounds of percussion and whistles that convey the vivid impression of learning new words. In this special screening, a live session with percussion instruments and everyday objects will be performed in sync with the film, allowing the dynamic interplay of text and sound to be experienced more profoundly. Audience members are welcome to bring their own small percussion instruments or everyday objects that make sounds and participate in the session. Join the artist Jonathas de Andrade and musician Homero Basílio from Brazil to share in the live resonance and vibration of this unique event.
The film is in Portuguese with English and Japanese subtitles. The event includes a short talk in English with Japanese consecutive interpretation.
