AKI SASAMOTO: SPIRITS CUBED (PERFORMANCE)

AKI SASAMOTO: SPIRITS CUBED (PERFORMANCE)

Aki Sasamoto is known for her groundbreaking performance/installation practice in which she presents improvised monologues and actions in specially prepared sculptural environments. She is performing selected works during Art Week Tokyo as part of her midcareer survey exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, “Aki Sasamoto’s Life Laboratory.”

At 3pm on Friday, November 7, and Sunday, November 9, she will perform Spirits Cubed, first produced for the “Thank You Memory: From Cidre to Contemporary Art” at the Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art, Aomori, in 2020, and first performed in “Apple Cycle / Cosmic Seed” at the same museum in 2021.

Artist Statement on Spirits Cubed (2020)

Site specific installation with materials left behind from the renovation of the Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art building. Before being turned into a new museum, the building housed an apple cider factory. Doors with duct openings, outdoor gates, windows, and ladders are rearranged in the exhibition space and form pathways for wind and spirits.

The performance on November 7 will be conducted in English; the performance on November 9 will be conducted in Japanese.
