AKI SASAMOTO: SOUNDING LINES, CATCH OR BE CAUGHT (PERFORMANCE)

AKI SASAMOTO: SOUNDING LINES, CATCH OR BE CAUGHT (PERFORMANCE)

Aki Sasamoto is known for her groundbreaking performance/installation practice in which she presents improvised monologues and actions in specially prepared sculptural environments. She is performing selected works during Art Week Tokyo as part of her midcareer survey exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, “Aki Sasamoto’s Life Laboratory.”

At 3pm on Thursday, November 6, and Saturday, November 8, Sasamoto will perform Sounding Lines, catch or be caught, a new work that combines a performance/installation she developed for a solo exhibition at Para Site, Hong Kong, in 2024 with a new commission for “Aki Sasamoto’s Life Laboratory.”

Artist Statement on Sounding Lines (2024)

Handmade enlarged lures are stretched amongst the room by long springs. A motorized arm whips the spring once in a while, sending a wave along and through the lure. Kitchen utensils in their bodies also shake. In performances, the floating objects are moved around and demonstrate different harmonic patterns seen in waves and in friendships.

The performance on November 6 will be conducted in English; the performance on November 8 will be conducted in Japanese.
