CURATORIAL STATEMENT

This exhibition brings together works by Taro Masushio and Sophie Nys to examine the unstable and intricately entangled relations between body, image, and language.

While the artists’ practices emerge from distinct vocabularies—Masushio working primarily with photography and video, and Nys with sculpture and installation—they converge in a sustained engagement with questions of corporeality and sexuality. Far from functioning as mere reservoirs of iconographic motifs, these domains emerge as genuine fields of conceptual inquiry, within which the artists interrogate the history of representation, structures of power, the detours and ambiguities of desire, and the potentials of their respective mediums.

Informed by a keen awareness of the political dimension of the gaze and its mechanisms, Masushio and Nys develop works that are at once dense and elliptical, where meaning unfolds through strategic displacements and subtle shifts. Humor also occupies a significant place within their distinct approaches. Operating as a corrosive agent capable of unsettling expectations and destabilizing hierarchies, it simultaneously serves as a joyful mask of the irreducible opacity of meaning.
