RIEKO HIDAKA

For more than four decades Rieko Hidaka has explored themes of perception, distance, and relationality through her large-scale monochrome paintings of trees. Working outdoors, Hidaka looks upward at a tree from below and sketches her subject while continually shifting her viewpoint. She then enlarges these studies into paintings using Japanese mineral pigments. Hung on the wall, the resulting works produce the uncanny sensation of viewing an overhead scene straight on. Countless branches, leaves, and buds appear to envelop the viewer, while their extension toward a notional sky evokes an expanse at once spatial and temporal. This exhibition presents Hidaka’s latest efforts to deepen her unique pictorial practice.

TOMIO KOYAMA GALLERY

Tomio Koyama Gallery was founded in Tokyo’s Sagacho district in 1996 and has since established itself as a cornerstone of Japan’s contemporary art scene. Dedicated to introducing new perspectives to the art market, the gallery represents a diverse, multigenerational roster of Japanese and international artists, including Kishio Suga, Mika Ninagawa, Hiroshi Sugito, and Richard Tuttle, and also features contemporary ceramics in its program. From the start Tomio Koyama Gallery has maintained an active presence at international art fairs. The gallery has locations in Roppongi, Tennozu, and Kyobashi in Tokyo and a branch in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture.
