NORITAKA TATEHANA: HEEL-LESS SHOES
Artist Noritaka Tatehana rose to global fame for his signature Heel-Less Shoes (2010–), inspired by Japanese takageta, the elevated wooden clogs traditionally worn by courtesans. Evoking the takageta’s distinctive structure while displacing its original function, Tatehana reconstructs the clog as an object that exists fluidly between sculpture, design, and craft. This exhibition showcases the breadth of Tatehana’s practice and his continued exploration of form, materiality, and transformation by presenting new sculptures and paintings alongside a selection of the Heel-Less Shoes.
KOSAKU KANECHIKA
Kosaku Kanechika was founded in Tokyo in 2017. Part of a new generation of venues redefining the local art landscape, the gallery showcases work by Japanese artists who are active both nationally and internationally. Represented artists include Yutaka Aoki, Takuro Kuwata, Miwa Kyusetsu XIII, Junko Oki, Ataru Sato, Chikashi Suzuki, Yosuke Takeda, Noritaka Tatehana, and Hiroto Tomonaga. The program also features international artists, such as Dan McCarthy and Ruby Neri, whose innovative approaches to expression transcend medium and genre.
