SHIORI HIGASHIYAMA / KOHEI KOBAYASHI

Born in 1990, Tokyo-based artist Shiori Higashiyama makes paintings that reflect on interpersonal boundaries and the measures we take to protect ourselves, both mentally and physically. Her compositions combine images that evoke separation, such as walls and hedges, with grid-based geometric forms. Inviting questions about where we can go to find safer spaces amid our precarious lives, the works offer up a quiet resistance to the world’s absurdities.

Born in 1974 and based in Saitama, Kohei Kobayashi uses sculpture and video to reexamine the perceptual relations between objects and phenomena, often taking other people’s comments as starting points for his projects. In this exhibition he expands upon that framework, using “fantasy” as a keyword to envision a cycle that employs reflection on and critique of the world and its order to create a new world (and order).

ANOMALY

Launched in 2018, Anomaly celebrates art that deviates from the norm, common order, or rule. Responding to the conditions for contemporary art in Japan and Asia, it presents a diverse program of exhibitions, performances, and events that emerge from research and dialogue. In doing so, Anomaly seeks to cultivate a fertile ground for seeding cultural change and expanding creativity beyond the existing framework of traditional art galleries.
