This two-day symposium is co-organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions, a unit of Centre Pompidou, Paris. Bringing together speakers from Japan and aborad, the symposium is convened as part of special programming accompanying the exhibition “Tada Minami—Still, shimmering light.” Taking Tada’s practice as a point of departure, the symposium will examine the contributions of women artists to sculpture after World War II while highlighting the cross-disciplinary relationships between art, architecture, and design. Individual presentations will further explore postwar spatial practices related to gender issues from a variety of angles, focusing on materiality, abstract sculpture, and public space.
The symposium will be moderated by Nina Volz and Marina Amada of AWARE and Hikari Odaka and Mariko Tamura from MOT.
